Claude Design: Anthropic's AI Design Tool That Turns a Sentence Into Prototypes, Slides, and Marketing Assets

Overview

On April 17, 2026, Anthropic formally released Claude Design — a brand-new AI design product and one of the first experimental offerings from Anthropic Labs. It lets you create polished visual work by talking to Claude: design mockups, interactive prototypes, slide decks, one-pagers, and more.

Claude Design runs on the latest Claude Opus 4.7 and is open to Claude Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise subscribers. The market read its potential immediately — Figma’s stock fell 7 percent in a single day. Official announcement: anthropic.com/news/claude-design-anthropic-labs. Entry point: claude.ai/design.

Who It’s For

Anthropic positions the product around two audiences: people with design backgrounds — explore far more directions instead of “we only had time for two or three” — and people without design backgrounds — founders, product managers, and marketers who for the first time can independently produce professional-looking visual work. Notably, Anthropic stresses that Claude Design is meant to complement Figma, not replace it — making the many scenarios that never needed professional vector editing dramatically simpler.

The Core Workflow

1. Automatic brand-system building

On first use, Claude Design reads your codebase and design files to construct a design system for your team automatically. Every subsequent project uses your colors, typography, and components by default; you can refine the system over time and maintain multiple brand kits.

2. Multi-source import

Start from any of these: a text prompt (the most natural path — just describe what you need); uploaded images (screenshots, inspiration references); uploaded documents (DOCX, PPTX, XLSX); URL scraping (citing web content directly); or a GitHub repository / Figma file reference.

3. Fine-grained iteration

After the first draft, iterate three ways: natural-language comments pinned to elements — “increase the CTA button’s contrast”; direct editing — modifying text like a traditional editor; and slider controls — Claude auto-generates adjustment sliders for spacing, color, and layout in real time.

4. Export and delivery

Finished designs export multiple ways: internal URL sharing with organization-level permissions (view-only or editable); export to Canva for continued editing; PDF and PPTX for decks; standalone HTML files; or a handoff to Claude Code — packaging the design system and prototype in one click so a single instruction starts development.

The Six Core Capabilities

Prompt-to-prototype generation. The core skill: natural language in, interactive HTML prototype out. Landing pages and simple app prototypes come out excellent; complex dashboards and business workflows need iterative rounds.

Design-system extraction. This is Claude Design’s sharpest difference from Lovable and v0. It extracts a design system — colors, fonts, component libraries, spacing, grids — automatically from GitHub repos and Figma files and applies it to all new projects. One tester pointed it at an iOS Markdown-reader repository and got a prototype matching the existing app’s look with no extra prompting.

Inline editing. Three coexisting edit modes — comments, direct text edits, real-time sliders — avoid full regeneration for every micro-adjustment and save substantial tokens.

Multi-format import. From Word documents to screenshots, PPTs to codebases, Claude Design converts sources into prototypes. Say “redesign this stripe.com page in our brand style” and get a consistent render.

Multi-format export. The same design can leave as an editable Canva file, a PDF proposal, a PPTX deck, an HTML prototype — or go straight to Claude Code for development, making the product a genuine bridge from idea to engineering.

Advanced prototyping. Prototypes can include voice interaction, video playback, 3D elements, shader effects, even built-in AI calls — demonstrating an AI product with real, interactive features instead of static mockups.

Claude Design’s unique advantage is covering the full chain — idea → design system → prototype → iteration → development handoff — which no single competitor matches.

Pricing and Access

  • Pro users: available directly, counted against subscription quota
  • Max users: available, with extra usage beyond the included amount
  • Team / Enterprise: off by default; admins enable it in organization settings
  • Billing: no extra charge — included in existing subscriptions

Reception

The industry response has been strongly positive. Brilliant, the education platform: “The most challenging interaction and animation prototypes now take 2 prompts; other tools took 20+.” From the designer community: “Idea to working prototype before the meeting ends — that used to be a week of round-trips between requirement docs, mockups, and reviews.” And Figma’s 7 percent single-day drop: the market sees a long-term threat in AI-native design tooling.

Limits to Know

  • Currently a research preview; features are still moving fast
  • Complex interactions and business workflows need multiple iterations
  • No real-time multiplayer editing — Figma remains irreplaceable there
  • High token consumption (Opus 4.7 is under the hood, after all)
  • Accessibility has not yet been independently audited

The Bottom Line

Claude Design marks an important direction for AI in design tooling: not replacing designers, but letting everyone participate in visual creation. Its two genuine innovations — design-system extraction and one-click handoff to Claude Code — connect the full path from idea to design to development. For founders, product managers, and marketers, it may be the first tool that lets you independently produce professional visual work without embarrassment. For designers, it is a powerful exploration accelerator. If you’re already a Claude user, try it directly at claude.ai/design.
